Aim of the game
4 players play in pairs with a spanish deck of 40 cards (8 and 9 not included).
The main goal of the game is to win 3 rounds before the opponents.
To win a round you must score as many points as possible by getting the most valuable cards and performing “calls” (“declarations”).

How to play Tute
In 4-player games, everyone starts with 10 cards.
The last card indicates the trump suit (shown on the table). The trump suit beats any other suit and is the key to win the game. The trump suit beats any other suit and is the key to win the game.
The hand player starts the game with a card. The following players must respond with another card according to the following rules:
- A card of the same suit higher than any other on the table.
- A card of the same suit.
- A trump card higher than any other on the table.
- Any other card.
It is not mandatory to beat the start card with a higher one (rule 1) if another player already played a trump.
The player who has played the highest card wins all the cards on the table (the “trick”) and will start playing in the next hand.
The round continues until all players run out of cards.
The “calls”
A “call” is a special play that allows you to get extra points during the round.
- It is only possible to “call” when you or your partner have won the first trick.
- The “calls” should be made in order of priority, otherwise they will be lost. In other words, you should first declare “tute”, then “the 40” and then the rest.
- Only one “call” is allowed per turn after winning a trick (each member of the pair can make one).
Note: usually in Tute all “calls” are made at the beginning of the trick. But this rule has been slightly adapted to speed up and simplify the game.
Call | Description | Points |
---|---|---|
Tute | 4 kings or the 4 knights | Win the round directly |
The 40 | King and knight of the trump suit | 40 points |
20 in coins, swords, clubs and cups | King and knight of the same suit | 20 points |
Tip: good communication with the partner is important for not blocking a possible higher “call” of the partner.
Count up points
The player or pair with more points will win the round. It will depend on the cards they have won and the “calls”.
Furthermore, the last trick of the round adds 10 additional points. In case of a tie, the pair who got this trick will win.
In each round there is a total of 120 points, 30 for each suit of the deck. You can score up to 100 points with the “calls” and 10 points with the last trick.
